How to refuel at a Japanese self-service gas station?
This page introduces how to refuel at a self-service gas station in Japan. You may not know how to operate a gas station that displays Japanese on the screen. Therefore, I will post the refueling procedure with a photo.
How to operate the refueling screen displayed in Japanese
Fuel Dispenser at Japanese gas stations
Fuel Dispenser in Japan has almost the same shape at every gas station. The contents displayed on the screen are almost the same at all gas stations, so it is not difficult to learn the operating procedure.
Start screen
This is an example of a terminal installed at a "Shell" gas station. You can start the refueling operation by touching the button displayed at the bottom of the screen.
Select payment method
First, select a payment method. The upper button is for cash payment, the lower right button is for credit card payment, and the lower left button is for electronic money payment. The vertically long red button on the left is a payment button for mobile phones. Here, I will introduce the procedure for making payments with a credit card.
There is a credit card insertion slot at the bottom of the screen and the green light is on. When you insert the card, the card will be returned after reading the card number.
Coupon scanning (skippable)
Next, the coupon scanning screen is displayed. If you don't have a coupon, you can skip it by touching the blue button at the bottom right. Similarly, the scanning screen for coupons and point cards may be displayed on other companies' gas station terminals.
Enter email member password (skippable)
Next, the password entry screen for the mail member is displayed. If you are not a mail member, you can skip it by touching the blue button on the right.
Selection of oil type and refueling amount
Next, the screen for selecting the oil type and the amount of refueling is displayed. Red is regular gasoline, yellow is high octane gasoline, and green is light oil. This color coding is a specification common to all gas stations in Japan. You can choose the amount of refueling from three types: "Filling up the tank", "Specified amount", and "Specified quantity". If you press the "Filling up the tank" button, you can fill as much gasoline as you need.
Start refueling
First touch the static eliminator sheet and then lift the refueling nozzle. When refueling is complete, return the refueling nozzle to its original position.
Refueling completed
When you return the refueling nozzle to its original position, refueling is completed and the receipt will come out from the receipt issuing slot.
If you choose to pay in cash, you can not get change coins from the Fuel Dispenser. You can receive your change coins by holding the receipt over the reader of a nearby checkout machine.
Keychain type payment tool
EasyPay and EneKey
At gas stations in Japan, you can get a key chain type payment tool for free. This tool eliminates the need to remove your credit card from your wallet when refueling. If you hold this tool over the terminal of the Fuel Dispenser, you can make a payment using the credit card information registered in advance. This tool can be obtained by applying at the reception desk of the gas station. The upper white key is "EasyPay" that can be used at "Shell" gas stations, and the lower black key is "EneKey" that can be used at "ENEOS" gas stations.
Start screen
This is an example of a terminal installed at an "ENEOS" gas station. You can start the refueling operation by touching the button on the screen.
The "ENEOS" gas station refueling terminal has almost the same shape as the "Shell" gas station refueling terminal mentioned above. There is a receipt issuing slot and credit card insertion slot on the right side of the touch screen, and a cash insertion slot on the far right.
Select payment method
First, select a payment method. The rightmost button on the top row is for cash payment, and the rightmost button on the bottom row is for credit card payment.
T-Card scanning (skippable)
Next, the T-card (reward card) reading screen is displayed. If you don't have a T-card, you can skip it by touching the blue button at the bottom right.
Selection of oil type and refueling amount
Next, the screen for selecting the oil type and the amount of refueling is displayed. This screen is almost the same as the "Shell" screen described above. The only difference is that the refueling amount specification button and the quantity specification button are not separated.
After selecting the oil type and refueling amount, a confirmation screen will be displayed. You can start refueling by touching the button at the bottom right.
Start refueling
When this screen is displayed, you are ready to refuel. First touch the static eliminator sheet and then lift the refueling nozzle. When refueling is complete, return the refueling nozzle to its original position.
Refueling completed
When you return the refueling nozzle to its original position, refueling is completed and you can receive the receipt from the receipt issuing slot.
